Introduction to Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten

Professor Janwillem Schrofer will briefly discuss the history of the Rijksakademie, using images of works by previous artists from across the globe that he has worked with at this influential institution; reflecting on the meaning and relevance of artist residencies as critical platforms within an artistic career.

Founded by King William III in 1870, the Rijksakademie was intended to be “a haven of international standing’. Today, the Rijksakademie functions as a laboratory for developing talent on an international level. It is a global research and production place for talented, professional artists from all over the world. There are approximately fifty studios where resident artists work for a period of two years on research, experimenting with projects and production. Large project spaces are available for collaborations and presentations. In addition to artistic and theoretical advice, facilities include extensive technical workshops, a library, artists’ documentation and art collections (Expertise Center). Each year, out of almost 2000 applicants, approximately twenty-five artists are invited for a residency that includes initial financial support to cover living expenses, lodgings and a modest production budget.

Come and listen to how you might be applicable as a resident of one of the world’s most successful artist-in-residence programs.
