Trevor Smith is the inaugural Curator of Contemporary Art at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts – the oldest continuously operating museum in the United States. Prior to joining the Peabody Essex, Smith was Curator in Residence at the Centre for Curatorial Studies, Bard College where in 2006 he co-curated Wrestle, the inaugural exhibition at the Hessel Museum and in 2007 presented is Martin Creed: Feelings, the first large-scale survey of this artist’s work. From 2003-2006 he was Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City where, among other projects he co-curated the widely acclaimed exhibition Andrea Zittel: Critical Space and presented a major survey of the work of Brian Jungen. Smith was born in Canada and studied Art History at the University of British Columbia. From 1992-2003 he was based in Australia where he worked first at the Biennale of Sydney, then as Director of the Canberra Contemporary Art Space, and from 1997-2003 as Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. He has produced over fifty exhibitions and has published widely in exhibition catalogues and journals in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. He is also currently co-curator of the 2010 Singapore Biennale
