San Art would like to extend our warmest welcome to artist Ze Wei, our 2nd exchange artist from Bamboo Curtain Studio in Taiwan, to Ho Chi Minh City. Wei has continued the tradition of residency exchange between the two art spaces, and we are delighted that she will be here for a two-month residency from August to October.
Wei is an artist with a keen perception of global issues and always tries to integrate them into her artworks. Using visual images as a tool, she analyzes the reciprocal effects between the contemporary world and its historical context in order to answer questions raised by the global status quo.
Her previous projects revolve around the concept of “national territories / boundaries”, such as globalization, human migration, and diaspora. Wei has visited the Department of Graphic Arts of Anadolu University in Turkey for a five-month exchange program, with scholarships from the European Union and the Marseille Academy of Fine Arts in late 2013. In late 2014 and again in early 2016, she traveled to Eastern provinces in Turkey and visited Ani, an ancient Armenian capital now in the Turkish territory, to work on an art project consists of archival research and image creations.
During her residency at Sàn Art, Wei plans to research about Vietnamese female poetry. Through close investigations into the eighteenth-century Vietnamese female poet Hồ Xuân Hương and her Chữ Nôm poems, along with visual documents and historical data, Ze Wei attempts to unveil the alternative facets of Vietnamese women that are absent in the mainstream discourse in Taiwan.
It is with great pleasure that San Art Laboratory welcomes artist Ze Wei and supports her art project about Vietnamese female poetry. We wish her a productive two-month residency, and look forward to connecting with her in our country!
