‘Being a means of resistance and relation that creates an open space in our contemporary society, drawing can be considered as one of the most powerful and incorruptible mediums… [Vietnamese artists] have explored the complex role of imagery in influencing perceptions about the people and the land, and its events. Though refined and fragile, the socio-political significance of drawing as an intimate, critical, and subversive tool cannot be underestimated…”

– Excerpt from essay “Past and Future Drawing as Resistance and Relation”(2007) by art critic and curator Catherine de Zegher

In this exhibition, artist and co-founder of San Art, Dinh Q. Lê, asked a group of Vietnamese artists to create new works based on their interpretations of the ‘Future’. The resulting artworks are as diverse and deep-rooted as the generations of people that navigate Vietnam’s cityscapes.

This exhibition also features an essay written by curator and writer, Catherine de Zegher. Along with her numerous contributions to the reification of drawing in contemporary art practice De Zegher was Executive Director of New York’s Drawing Center from 1999 – 2007.
